How to Care for Your Human Hair Wig or Topper: Daily Care, Washing & Storage

Human hair wigs and toppers can last beautifully with the right care. The key is simple: be gentle, avoid unnecessary heat and buildup, and store your piece properly between wears.

Daily Care

After wearing, gently detangle the hair before putting it away.

  • Start at the ends and work upward
  • Use a wide-tooth comb or wig-friendly brush
  • Support the hair or base while brushing
  • Be especially gentle around lace, mono, silk tops, and hand-tied areas
  • Use a light leave-in spray or serum only when needed

Avoid brushing aggressively or pulling directly on the base.

Heat Styling

Human hair pieces can be blow-dried, curled, and straightened, but repeated high heat will dry the hair faster.

Use a heat protectant and keep tools at a low-to-moderate temperature whenever possible. Avoid holding concentrated heat directly against lace, mono, or other delicate base materials.

For extra volume, gently lift the roots while blow-drying rather than using very high heat.

When & How to Wash

You don’t need to wash your piece after every wear. For regular use, around every 7–10 wears is a reasonable starting point, but wash sooner if there is noticeable sweat, odor, or product buildup.

Before washing, detangle the hair.

  1. Wet with lukewarm water.
  2. Apply a gentle, moisturizing shampoo in the direction of the hair.
  3. Do not scrub, twist, or bunch the hair together.
  4. Rinse thoroughly.
  5. Apply conditioner mainly through the mid-lengths and ends.
  6. Rinse again and gently squeeze away excess water.

Keep heavy conditioner and oils away from delicate knots and the base whenever possible.

Drying

After washing, gently blot the hair with a towel. Do not rub or wring it.

Place the piece on an appropriate wig or topper stand and allow it to air-dry when convenient. If blow-drying, use heat protectant and moderate heat.

It is usually easier to style once the hair is damp rather than soaking wet.

Products: Less Is More

Good basics include:

  • Gentle shampoo
  • Moisturizing conditioner
  • Lightweight leave-in conditioner
  • Heat protectant
  • A small amount of lightweight serum

Use oils, hairspray, dry shampoo, and silicone-heavy products sparingly. Too much product can make alternative hair look heavy and require more frequent washing.

How to Store Your Wig or Topper

For everyday storage, gently detangle the hair and place your piece on a wig stand, topper stand, or another surface that helps maintain its shape.

Keep it away from direct sunlight, heat, humidity, and dust.

For longer storage, make sure the piece is completely dry before placing it in a protective box or bag. Avoid folding or crushing delicate bases.

When traveling, use a structured wig case or protective bag rather than packing the piece tightly under clothing.

A Few Things to Avoid

Try not to:

  • Sleep or shower in your piece routinely
  • Store it while damp
  • Brush aggressively
  • Rub or wring after washing
  • Use excessive heat
  • Overload the hair with styling products
  • Pull directly on lace or knots

A little gentle care goes a long way. Unlike biological hair, wigs and toppers do not receive natural scalp oils, so moisture, low friction, and careful handling are especially important.
