Before Your First Wear: What to Do When Your New Hair Arrives
Your new wig or topper has arrived. Before you start trimming, washing, or styling, take a few minutes to make sure it’s the right piece for you.
1. Inspect & Try It On First
Before removing tags or making any changes, check:
- Color, length, density, and texture
- Cap or base construction
- Overall condition
- Fit and coverage
Try it on gently and look at it in natural daylight if possible. A new piece may look slightly flat or compressed from packaging, so don’t judge the final look just yet.
Before you decide to keep it, avoid washing, cutting lace, trimming, coloring, or using heavy styling products.
2. Once You’re Keeping It, Bring the Hair to Life
Hair often needs a little help after being packed and shipped. This is where a few simple styling steps can make a big difference.
Lightly Mist the Hair
Use a spray bottle to apply a very fine mist of water. The hair should be slightly damp—not wet.
This helps release bends from packaging and makes the hair easier to reshape.

Gently Fluff & Separate
Use your fingers to loosen the hair, lift the roots, and separate any sections that were flattened during shipping.
For toppers, gently fluff around the crown and part to help the hair fall more naturally.
Adjust the Part
Use your fingers or a wide-tooth comb to guide the hair into your preferred part.
For lace, mono, or silk-top pieces, handle the base gently and avoid pulling directly on the knots.

Blow-Dry Into Shape
For human hair pieces, you can use a blow dryer on low to medium heat to reshape the hair.
Direct the airflow downward along the hair shaft while gently using your fingers or a brush to smooth and shape it.
If the roots look flat, lift the hair slightly while blow-drying to create natural volume.
Finish With Light Styling
Once the hair is dry, you can lightly curl, straighten, or smooth it as needed.
Use a heat protectant and avoid excessive heat—especially close to lace, mono, or delicate base materials.
The goal isn’t to completely restyle the piece. Usually, a little misting, fluffing, and shaping is enough to make it look much more natural.
3. Give Yourself a Little Time
A wig or topper often looks different once it has been unpacked, lightly styled, and worn for a few minutes.
If something still seems genuinely wrong with the color, fit, construction, or condition, stop before making further alterations and review the return policy.
A simple rule to remember:
Inspect first. Style second. Alter last.
